They were unreliable, unsafe, uneconomic, uncomfortable and, in many cases, downright ugly compared with what we drive around in today. Even so, you have to hand it to the cars of yesteryear. They had character. And they had colour, too.
Just look around you on the roads or in the supermarket car park this weekend and you will see assorted shades of grey with the odd smattering of pastel. Back in the good (or perhaps bad) old days of British motoring, people were perfectly happy ordering a car in banana yellow, tomato red or some truly execrable shades of brown.

The idea of a home “trip” can depend entirely, savagely so, on what age you are. Growing weary in the back of an Austin Allegro as a child, you simply long for entertainment. As a teenager, taking up too much room in the Renault, you damn everything with faint, bored praise. And then, suddenly, you hit your 20s, meet someone, and the idea of a day trip to a coast or castle or canal becomes embroidered with the idea of adulthood, paying for things on your own, with unique laughter and a dusting of lust.
An electric car has topped the list compiled by experts of the ten worst motors ever invented.
The Reva G-Wiz has the performance of a sleepy vole and the structural integrity of your slippers according to Auto Express.
It beat some of the classics to the number one spot including the Austin Allegro, the Morris Marina, the Chrysler PT Cruiser and Del Boy s Reliant Robin.
The list also includes familiar 70s and 80s bangers such as the Rover CityRover, the SsangYong Rodius and the FSO Polonez.
