Monadnock Ledger-Transcript - Track and field: Conant thrower brings home state title; Orioles, Vikings, Cougars in championship action

Monadnock Ledger-Transcript Published: 5/30/2021 9:50:03 PM Conant junior Garrett Somero became an unlikely state champion at Wednesday’s NHIAA Division III track and field championships at Gilford. Somero, a baseball player recruited by Conant track coach Bill Edson to try his hand at some field events, had only practiced the shot put twice this spring before tossing a qualifying distance at Conant’s last chance meet. On Wednesday, Somero took on the best of DIII – many of whom had been training for years – and hurled the shot put a personal best 45 feet to win the state title. “It feels amazing,” Somero said. “Even though I didn’t put many hours in, I feel as though with some more training, I can turn some heads and put my name out there for this sport.”

Monadnock Ledger-Transcript - Track and field: Young ConVal team showing promise early on

Monadnock Ledger-Transcript Published: 5/3/2021 12:00:59 PM ConVal’s track and field team is building back toward contention after last year’s pandemic-canceled season delayed their development. “Even our juniors, it’s at best their second season,” said head coach Lance Flamino, “and with so many freshmen, kids are really kind of learning the ropes, and even our returning athletes don’t have a ton of experience.” ConVal’s star-studded 2019 spring season is long in the rearview now, with only a handful of student-athletes remaining; more than half Flamino’s team are freshmen. Team championships aren’t likely in the cards this year, but the Cougars should be able to make some improvements as they look toward the future while potentially sending some individual athletes to the state championship.
