and left with a big suitcase full of cash to get the kids out of prison. and then late that summer, when it came time to write a big speech for dr. king, that man who signed the promissory note for the $100,000 to get the elementary schoolkid prisoners out of prison released to their parents so they could go back to school. that man who you see over dr. king s right shoulder, suggested that that promissory note experience he had at that bank vault on that saturday morning in new york city with the governor might make a metaphor for a big speech. on august 28th, 1963 you can when that speech was delivered. the civil rights leader said the founders of our nation in writing our nation s founding documents were signing a promissory note to which every american was to fall heir, a promise that all men would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. it s obvious today that america
