A delightfully warm collection of folk songs perfect for an overcast winter day, Maria Dunn’s seventh album is outright springy at times, historically pertinent at others and calmly, sincerely emotional throughout. It releases into the world this Friday.
Besides that confident voice, what I’ve always loved about Dunn is her ability to take us to the realest, least fantastical places across time and space, and her look at humanity from both ends of mortality makes this album especially universal, despite its keen focus on a few Edmonton landmarks, both in event and on our skyline.

Pandemic or no pandemic, Edmonton musicians are always creating. This past year was no exception; here’s a list of Edmonton acts that released a single, EP, or album in 2020. We tried to get everyone in, but it’s by no means complete; we welcome additions in the comments section.
They’ve kept a low profile lately, but husband and wife folk duo 100 Mile House decided to choose a health crisis in which to return with Love And Leave You. House music duo Anzu dug deep into the groove for their single Time, while Jason Borys teamed up with Courteney Morin and nêhiyawak’s Kris Harper for the abstract synth sounds of Ag47, releasing a few albums including Music for Mr. Quinn. Age of the Willing debuted with their single Things I Miss, and roots-rockers Ayla Brook & the Soundmen became the favored band of Ryan Jespersen with Desolation Sounds.
