a pretty low lying area. that storm surge they re preparing for, what exactly might that look like when it comes to the businesses and the homes in that area? reporter: well, to give you a sense of howe things look where we are right now, we re at a park that s surrounded by three bays, the old tampa bay, the tampa bay and then that third bay. what they re worried about, especially the folks in pinellas county, that storm surge is going to flood things no matter what. even if that forecast track ends up having ian moving parallel to tampa bay and the tampa area, they still believe we re going to see a lot of that water making its way inland. so they want folks to go ahead and come out and get these sandbags. the lines at these three locations were pretty long. it s our understanding they re going to continue to do this today and tomorrow and most likely into wednesday. however, emergency officials again have been telling folks, try to get this done early because we could
unclear exactly where ian could hit the rest. forecasters say if tampa takes a direct hit, it could be like nothing seen in this lifetime. in neighboring st. petersburg, the mayor there says it could be the storm they hoped would never come. across the state, people are gassing up, emptying shelves and filling sandbags. we have live team coverage. let s get right to our meteorologist tom saider for the latest timing impacts. tom. we have a lot to talk about and it s going to continue to change in the next couple of days, and it very slightly, 20 mile an hour shift in the eye means everything in florida. typically we have an icon over the center, but we took it away so we can start to see the bright colors of purple. so that convective activity is showing near the center. we re about 100 miles to the west of the cayman islands, south of the western tip of cuba. i want to show you the radar. this is the cayman islands. you can seat the pin wheel effect starting to see the eye
to get out. the red on this map shows the mandatory evacuations as of one hour ago. basically the low lying areas near the water. ian is getting strzokker. florida governor said it is 500 miles wide at the moment and he adds that the storm surge and heavy rains will impact the entire state. we will see on the gulf coast of florida heavy rains, strong winds, flash flooding, storm surge and perhaps isolated tornado activity and that is true regardless of the precise track that this takes. don t think because the eye may not be in your area you won t see impacts. you will see significant impacts. these counties expected to see a lot of water and a lot of flooding. the governor activated 5,000 members of the florida national guard and another 2,000 from other states. cnn meteorologist tom sater is here with the latest on ian s path. where will it make landfall? in cuba within 200 miles of that. still a category 1. it is over the warmest waters of the atlantic. we had rapid
