Rub and buzz added to loudspeaker analysis software
Audio Precision has improved loudspeaker and headphone analysis capability with version 6.1 software for its APx500 analysers.
“Most importantly for the designers and manufacturers of speaker drivers, and products incorporating them, APx software now offers the broadest set of methodologies available for detecting rub and buzz defects,” according to the company, explaining: “Rub and buzz is a term commonly used to describe any one of several possible manufacturing defects that cause undesirable noises to be emitted during speaker operation.”
Rub-related noises occur when the speaker cone is off centre or canted, causing moving parts to rub against static parts. Buzz is due to loose particles – chips off the magnet or bits of glue – trapped in the speaker’s gaps. Another fault detected is air leaks – commonly perforations in the speaker surround, unsealed dust caps or gaps in the housing.

Battery Ventures, a global, technology-focused investment firm, has reached an agreement to acquire imc Test Measurement ( imc ), a global provider of productive test and measurement hardware and software solutions. Joining Battery s group of companies in the test and measurement market, imc will operate alongside U.S.-based Audio Precision and Denmark-based GRAS Sound Vibration, which were acquired by Battery in 2018 and 2020, respectively. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
New power modules aimed at engineers for CCP measurement microphones
GRAS Sound and Vibration has introduced two new products: the GRAS 12BA and 12BB Microphone Power Modules targeted at engineers who need to power CCP measurement microphones and wish to seamless integrate microphone sensitivity data via TEDS.
These single-channel (12BA) and four-channel (12BB) USB-powered modules offer integrated TEDS support and are competitively priced for production test applications, saving time throughout setup and configuration.
The power modules can be utilised with any audio analyser, with TEDS data accessed in two ways. When paired with Audio Precision s APx audio analysers, TEDS can be read directly through the APx500 software. For employment with other analysers, TEDS data is offered through the Mic Power Module App, a command-line interface for TEDS data output. The software and app guarantee the accessibility of TEDS data.
