I dont know of any other institution thats opened up the doors to the American Dreams than miamidade college. Thank you for the service to the community and ultimately to the country. I want to spend a few moments talking about the book. The title is American Dream. The American Dream has nothing to do with how much money you make. The American Dream isnt about getting rich off of that may be your dream and a lot of americans would dream of. Its about achieving happiness as you define it. And for most people the American Dream and happiness is about simple things like owning a home and a safe and stable neighborhood, being able to raise your family and a safe and stable environment, having a job you find both rewarding and also that pays enough to be able to enjoy the things you like, save for retirement and be able to beat feed your children better off than your self. Passenger ships. These ships you could get over to europe if you just count the time in passage in maybe 14 days but a jet could take you over in eight to ten hours. It certainly wasnt as luxurious. You didnt get the kind of attention or the kind of food, but were interested as a people in convenience more than luxury and what happens is that most of the american passenger liners begin to sell off ships and good out of business. The excambian was put into mothballs on the hudson not far from west point and stayed there this was 1959 said there up until 1964 or 65. Thats when this new school in texas, this school i teach at, which was then called the Texas Maritime Academy today its texas a m university at galveston thats when the school began and it needed a training ship because it was a merchant marine academy. The students who went there trained to become third mates, those are the navigators or third assistant engineers the people who run the power plant. Their training included lo
In 1949, the ship was launched as the champion along with three other ships were called before aces. They were midsize ships. They could all 250 passengers. In those days they had to care for injures. You cant find that kind of attention if you go on a line of today. Extended all the way up to the latter 50s. Some can happen and what happened is air travel. There was of course air travel before the Second World War but there was increasing is air travel. At the late 1950s the first commercial jetliner between new york and europe moved back and forth and that really spelled the death knell for many transatlantic acid or ships.
