I’ve just worked out where the Proclaimers walked to to see their girlfriends (assuming the second 500 miles was the return home). As they come from Auchtermuchty it appears their sweethearts must have worked at Lyneham Inn just outside Plymouth. It took me about ten mins to work this out with Google maps. Anyone beat that?
