In a special meeting Tuesday, the Killeen City Council voted unanimously to hold the second election for the tied District 4 race on June 12. Early voting will be for six days beginning on June 1.
Candidate Michael Boyd received 181 votes compared to Incumbent Steve Harrisâs 179 on the May 1 Election Day. Harris gained two votes from provisional ballots counted on May 10, leading to a tie.
The city conducted an automatic recount on May 13, which confirmed the tie. Both candidates refused to concede or draw lots to settle the race so the city was required to hold a second election.
âI am pleased to know that the next Election Day is established. With the provided dates and locations we can better inform the constituents, whom were waiting to know,â Boyd said via text Tuesday after the vote. âI look forward to returning to the neighborhoods to learn more about the residentsâ concerns and engaging the voters.â
The Killeen City Council voted this week to repeal the ordinance making it illegal to purchase or possess tobacco by someone under the age of 18.
Does that mean minors can now purchase cigarettes? No. It is still illegal under both state and federal law for anyone under the age of 21 to possess, use, or purchase tobacco products. The state law was passed in September 2019 and the federal law was passed in December of that same year.
âWe havenât used this ordinance in a very long time,â City Attorney Traci Briggs told council at a April 20 workshop session. âThe police department has long used the state law.â
Good news for supporters of open carry: the Killeen City Council on Tuesday denied a motion to consider a resolution that would ban the open carry of handguns at future meetings.
Our partners at News 10 report that the issue had drawn considerable attention in prior weeks, but it was handled swiftly at Tuesday afternoon s meeting.
If you watch video from the meeting, you can hear what happened beginning around the 32min16sec mark. City Attorney Traci Briggs spoke before the council to clarify that any ban would apply to anywhere the City Council met if there were signs posted. Council members would not be exempt, and Briggs said any council member discovered to be carrying would face arrest.
