The word “landfill” conjures up an image of mountains of waste accompanied by foul smells and oozing liquids. These trash heaps, usually hidden on the edges of towns, represent our most wasteful impulses. “Landfill” sits close in my mind with words like “contamination” and “pollution.” However, this view marked my own ignorance of the potential of what landfills could be until I made my way to the nation of Singapore.
