to a little more than 9% in 2020. that is a huge jump, not driven solely by demographics. absolutely. it is a 10% increase. in 2016 to 2020 historic turnout at least for americans voting in the presidential election. it will be very interesting to see what the midterms. i think a lot of people think that in georgia specifically, that the power shift in the u.s. senate was because of the asian american voters coming out for warnock and senator ossoff. asian americans have been ignored by the political system for a long time. i think now that they are building power and grabbing power, it ll be very interesting to see how the democratic party and the republican party address this community. as someone who followed the story very closely, i am so grateful for your work on it because you just can t do it justice in a six minute segment. you need the time and space of a documentary to really dig in. so, thank you both so much for
whether it s 9/11, americans are suffering. and they feel pain and fear. and i think it is acutely manifesting in the symptom of asian hate. rising against asian hate, premiering monday on pbs, explores the aftermath of the atlanta spa shooting, where a gunman killed eight people, including eight women of asian descent in march 2021. joining me now the director and producer. you could have chosen a lot of jumping off points for this conversation, why focus on the atlanta shooting? i think for us, atlanta was kind of an inflection point in what had been two years of relentless attacks against asian americans during the pandemic. so, in this film, we not only wanted to tell the story of atlanta, we wanted to track what happened at the beginning
these women are part of our community. they are the moms and they are the answer. and i think in the aftermath of what happened, a lot of that was lost. and so we wanted to remind people of who these people were. the film examined the challenges for line forsman investigating hate crimes against the asian american community. take a look. the shootings in atlanta reveal that prosecuting hate crimes aimed at asian americans, presents unique challenges compared to other targeted groups. we had a lot of incidences where there were nooses found. you know what that means. it was geared towards intimidating black workers. and the jewish community, there is the not the simple. but of course, the asian american community, we don t have one symbol or multiple symbols that really solidify the ideology against asian americans.
