First division debutants Obras de San Juan and Ciudad Voley dominate
After a nine month pause, volleyball restarted in Argentina on Thursday with surprising results. Club Atletico Paracao and Defensores de Banfield, who are both part of the country’s elite division for the first time in 2020-2021, secured wins in their debuts in the Argentinean Cup.
The tournament is being held in Mar Del Plata and reunites the seven teams that will compete in the country’s men s national league, which will start in January 2021. The final is scheduled for December 17.
The opening match of the tournament brought the first upset of the day with Paracao defeating Obras de San Juan, a club with a 21-year tradition in the league, 3-0 (27-25, 25-23, 25-20). Outside hitter Juan Villarruel was pivotal in his team’s victory scoring 20 points, one more than Obras’ opposite Juan Bucciarelli.
