Cannabis Company Tilray s CEO Eyes Global, U S Opportunities After Megamerger

May 6, 2021 08:56 pm By Chloe Aiello Share with On the back of a megamerger with Aphria, the new Tilray is well-positioned to take advantage of global opportunities in cannabis, according to CEO Irwin Simon. “Tilray today has a footprint all around the world,” said Simon, who previously led Aphria. “We are participating in a $100 billion category with tremendous growth opportunities around our brands and the categories that we participate in.” The transaction closed Monday after shareholders approved the megamerger, and shares of the Tilray newly combined with pot producer Aphria kicked off trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange Wednesday under the ticker “TLRY.” They continue to trade on the Nasdaq Global Select Exchange, where the pot producer closed down more than 11 percent on Thursday.

Simon made the remarks in an interview on Closing Bell alongside Tilray CEO Brendan Kennedy. In December, the Canadian companies announced plans to merge in all-stock deal that would create the biggest cannabis producer by sales in the world. There s a lot of unknown about what will happen in the U.S. but we ll have the balance sheet, we ll have the knowledge, we ll have the brands, we ll have the technology to be able to make a major impact once legalization happens, Simon said. I say full legalization in the next two to three years. Simon, who will lead the combined company once the deal closes, added that he s a big believer that legalization may happen in Germany and Portugal and some other countries before the U.S.
