The Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw Plaza mall is 41 acres of prime commercial real estate in the nation’s second largest metropolitan area. When the mall came up for sale last year, a group of residents decided to shoot for the moon and started organizing to buy it, at a price tag now in the nine figures.
If their bid is successful, the residents envision bringing in more locally owned businesses with a preference for worker-owned cooperatives; adding new mixed-income housing; building a recording studio; and creating new green space on the lot.
They formed a nonprofit entity to take ownership of the mall, called Downtown Crenshaw. Over the past year they successfully rebuffed two bids from outside investors, and at a March 24 press event they went public with the $28 million in donations they’ve raised for a down payment on the property.

Last year, my family and I moved to a new home. After we were settled in, I shared with one of our neighbors that I taught and wrote about architecture. She was stunned and told me that there was another neighbor, right next door to me, who taught and practiced architecture also.
Shortly after, I met Cory Henry, and we began having regular discussions about architectural education and practice. Cory is the Principal and Founder of Atelier Cory Henry, a Los Angeles-based interdisciplinary design practice. He is currently a Kea Distinguished Professor at the University of Maryland, a Visiting Critic at Syracuse University, and has served as a Visiting Critic at the University of Pennsylvania, and a Visiting Assistant Professor in Architecture at Penn State University.
Black Community Thwarts Second Attempt by Connected Developer to Buy the Crenshaw Mall Details
SOUTH LOS ANGELES-For the second time in seventh months, the Black community has beaten back efforts to purchase the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza by developers connected to Donald Trump’s family members.
Downtown Crenshaw, an effort that combines community action and community development has defeated LivWrk-DFH Partners, which sought to buy the iconic Black commercial center of Los Angeles. Downtown Crenshaw pressured CIM Group to back out of their agreement to purchase the mall in June. Both LivWrk and CIM Group came under heavy scrutiny for their close connection to Donald Trump and his son-in-law Jared Kushner.
