Apr 7, 2021 PSU Holds Emergency Meetings to Finalize Position on GOB’s Wage Cuts The Public Service Union held a series of emergency meetings today to discuss with its membership the position they will take regarding a proposed salary cut and increment freeze.  Permission was granted by the Ministry of Public Service earlier today for government employees, those who belong to the labor organization, to get time-off to attend the meeting.  News Five understands that an initial meeting was held via Zoom at midday during which a vote was taken on whether the union should serve notice to government of an existing trade dispute.  Of the one hundred and two members in attendance, seventy-one voted in favor of serving notice on GOB, one member voted against the suggested course of action and another thirty abstained from the exercise.  Another virtual meeting was held at three o’clock this afternoon which will be followed by a final meeting at seven p.m.  The PSU is gal

National President, Senator Elena Smith says that in other districts, members of the Public Service Union and the Association of Public Service Senior Managers joined in the motorcades. Senator Smith says there is collaboration between the unions in the dialogue with G.O.B. since the salary cut and increment freeze is across the board for all public officers, including police officers.   Senator Elena Smith, National President, B.N.T.U. “That is the reason why we are moving forward as joint unions to put forward proposals and then to engage in all the other activities. So tomorrow’s press conference will see the other two unions being a part of that. And we should have seen a few of the public officers engaged in some of the districts because time was short with their notifications. So we do expect that as we move along and we progress with our activities that we will have their involvement in those activities.”

3-year 10% Salary Cut; 3-year Salary Freeze! | The Guardian Newspaper

On Friday, March 5, the Government of Belize sent a letter to the presidents of the Public Service Union (PSU), the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB), the President of the Association of Public Service Senior Managers (APSSM), and the President of the Belize National Teacher’s Union (BNTU). The letter was written to inform them that the government was proposing a three-year 10% salary cut for public officers. Additionally they are proposing a three-year salary freeze. This, according to the Government the salary cut will hold in place and is estimated to save 60 million dollars per year. The increment freeze for itself is expected to yield a 20 million dollars per year in savings. The letter states that “It is expected that the unions will recommend the method by which such minimum savings will be achieved, for example, by way of a flat rate across-the-board adjustment or a progressive salary band-based adjustment.”
