The southwestern province of Kampot has produced more than 75 kilotonnes of salt this season as a result of hot and otherwise favourable weather conditions, which is “more than double” the yield from 2022
Although “Kampot-Kep Salt” was domestically registered as a geographical indication (GI) late last month, distribution and export plans have been slow to materialise, even with roughly 67 kilotonnes harvested this season by end-April, according to Bun Narin, the head of the association in charge of the GI.
The process of establishing an association to represent and manage the “Kampot-Kep Salt” name once the commodity has been awarded domestic geographical indication (GI) status – expected late next month – is “progressing smoothly”, reported Bun Narin
