In February, San Diego State University opened the Latinx Resource Center (LRC)to support more than 10,000 Latinx students enrolled at our Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). In this piece, we consider the reasons why we at SDSU’s LRC have purposefully identified ourselves with the term Latinx.
It is useful to begin by acknowledging that the category we think of as Latinidad the identity labels Latina/o, Chicana/o, Hispanic and others is, and always has been, incredibly diverse, contextual, regional, dynamic and complicated. A deeper dive into the history behind each of these identity labels tells us that such terms were variously imposed, contested, reclaimed and revised to fit the needs, character and consciousness of different populations within our broad and diverse community.
