Alzheimer s is a leading cause of death, without state support

Bertha Bullen, guest writer View Comments Cancer. Cardiovascular disease. Diabetes. Suicide. These are among the top 10 leading causes of death in the United States. They also are recognized as health priorities in Michigan thanks to dedicated and funded state departments, sections and units. Alzheimer’s is one of the only top 10 leading causes of death in the United States to not yet have that support and recognition in Michigan, despite its growing burden. As someone who has now witnessed 10 family members diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, this is a cause that couldn’t be closer to my heart. It’s also something I hope, one day, future generations never have to experience.

May 6, 2021 The Alzheimer’s Association Michigan Chapter will partner with the Michigan Alzheimer’s Disease Center at the University of Michigan (MADC) to offer two research programs focused on the latest in Alzheimer’s research in May. The Michigan Chapter also will offer a variety of virtual education programs, social engagement programs and more than 100 support groups to Michigan residents in the coming months. “We’re thrilled to partner with Dr. Roberts and the MADC on our upcoming research events and offer much-needed programs and support to Michigan residents,” said Jean Barnas, Alzheimer’s Association program services director. “Unfortunately, Alzheimer’s is a growing burden here in Michigan and across the nation. It’s so important that Michiganders know we’re here for them.”

Alzheimer s Association raises funds, awareness of disease Ionia Sentinel-Standard MONTCALM COUNTY  An organization dedicated to helping those affected by Alzheimer’s disease is calling on the community to raise funds and awareness.  The Alzheimer’s Association announced the date and location for this year’s Montcalm and Ionia Walk to End Alzheimer’s. This year’s event takes place later this year, Sept. 18, at Frugthaven Farm, 11466 W. Carson City Road, in Greenville.   Teams and individuals can register for the event and start raising funds at: act.alz.org/mci.  The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event dedicated to Alzheimer’s care, support and research, according to a press release.
