Pacific health leaders expect benefits from health overhaul

Pacific health leaders expect a radical overhaul of New Zealand s health system to bring benefits for people of Pacific heritage. The change will mean the 20 district health boards which run services for individual areas around Aotearoa will be replaced by one new body, Health NZ, which will instead plan services for the whole population. Health NZ will have four regional divisions but also district offices. There will also be a new Māori Health Authority, sitting alongside that, to both set policies for Māori health and to decide and fund those who will deliver services. And, on the back of Covid 19, there will be a new Public Health Agency which will target widespread health problems - like smoking - and try to prepare for pandemics and epidemics.

National Hauora Coalition welcomes Government s announcement of an independent hauora agency

+Undoctored Media release from the National Hauora Coalition Wednesday 21 April 2021, 08:54 AM 2 minutes to Read The National Hauora Coalition (NHC) welcomes today’s announcement on the establishment of an Independent Hauora Agency focused on addressing the significant inequities that currently exist for Māori. NHC Chief Executive, Simon Royal, commented that “in the last 20 years we as a country have spent over $200 billion on health which has improved health outcomes for every population group, except for Māori. Doing more of the same is not good enough as New Zealanders, as Māori, are dying every day because of failings in our health system. It is time to accept we need to do something very different if we are serious about equity.”
