we ve got to get back to this fire. it continues to rage, just 25 miles outside of houston. bob royal, part of the assistant county fire marshal s office. thank you for joining us. what can be done about chemical fire of this magnitude that we continue to see? we had reports from our fire unit that we had a white smoke coming up from the plant and it quickly turned to black smoke. after that, we had heard about combustion of materials in the trailers. we had two trailers burned this afternoon. we are still in defensive posture. there s no one in there. unlike the first trailer that burned yesterday morning, from
i am the assistant chief for the county fire marshal s office. shortly after 4:30 p.m. this afternoon, we got a report from our fire units and law enforcement units that have been holding the perimeter at the arkema chemical plant east of crosby that we had a column of black smoke coming up from inside the facility. it turned to a light brown color and eventually to a heavy lack color somewhere around 5:30. after that, we had an intense combustion of the materials in one of the trailers that we had been talking about for several days now. that fire spread to a second trailer. two of the remaining trailers on the property have now burned. this afternoon, or this evening,
smelled the smoke. their symptoms were like the cheap described, burning sensation in their throat. burning sensation in their eyes. most of the symptoms that we expected they would feel if they are outside the 1.5-mile radius zone, we do not expect anybody to experience any of those symptoms. reporter: i know there was a second plan that was ultimately compromised, the generators were flooded out. what s been done to learn from this? sandra: that s an executive from the arkema chemical plant, where we have been witnessing that fire that is basically at the harris county fire marshal said, it has put itself out. you can still see the black plumes of smoke. very little wind. he said it did not put citizens in that area in trouble or at risk but they require a 1.5-mile evacuation zone.
