Coastal News Today | CA - Ropeless gear bill gets put on hold

Introduced on Feb. 10, Assembly Bill 534 the Whale Entanglement Prevention Act proposed mandating ropeless gear for trap fisheries such as the crabbing industry. Four days before the legislation was scheduled to go before the Assembly committee on Water, Parks, and Wildlife, Bonta became the state s attorney general. Steve Jones, a media specialist for the Center for Biological Diversity, said in a statement that the organization decided to withdraw the Whale Entanglement Prevention Act from this legislative session and try again next year.

A few bridges and the BART tunnel currently are the only ways across, and talk of adding crossings is for the distant future. Increasing riders on transbay buses has the potential of solving a lot of problems at once: reducing car congestion on the bridge, reducing pressure on BART, reducing greenhouse gasses and other pollutants.
