California state Assemblyman Ash Kalra Feb. 24 was named âNature Defenderâ by the California League of Conservation Voters.
Kalra is one of just five legislators to be honored at the Feb. 24 ceremony releasing the annual CLCV Legislative Scorecard.
âIâm also thrilled to be one of only 11 legislators with a perfect 2021 environmental score,â the Indian American state official wrote in a letter to supporters.
In 2020, Kalra wrote Assembly Bill 3030, which would require the state to protect 30 percent of its land and water by the year 2030.

For state lawmakers, 2020 “was a year that started out with lots of aspirational plans,” said Ken Jacobs, chair of the UC Berkeley Labor Center. “But it became a year about saving lives.”
What with legislators’ personal COVID-19 scares and Capitol shutdowns, “leadership basically asked us to kill any bill that wasn’t COVID-related,” said Heath Flora, R-Ripon, vice chair of the Assembly’s Labor and Employment Committee.
