ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly Standing Committee on Power Thursday approved the amendments to the Regulation of Generation, Transmission and Distribution of Electric Power Act 1997 empowering the government to impose surcharges on the power consumers to recover the cost what the power distribution companies (Discos) are piling up due to their own inefficiencies.
National Assembly Standing Committee on Power meeting was chaired by Ch Salik Hussain. Five members of the Committee gave votes in favour of the bill whereas four members opposed it. Sher Akbar, Amir Dogar, Saif-ur-Rehman, Lal Chand Engineer and Sabir Hussain Qaimkhani voted in favour of the bill. However, Shazia Marri, Saira Bano, Ghulam Mustafa Shah and Riaz Hussain Pirzada opposed giving sweeping powers to the government to impose surcharges on the consumers.

North Korean authorities have been providing “home and family property insurance cards” to North Koreans and collecting insurance premiums from them since last February, Daily NK has learned.
The move comes after the authorities distributed “explanatory materials” and conducted “trainings” regarding a new insurance system back in January.
“In early February, the home and family property insurance cards, issued by the Korean National Insurance Corporation, were distributed in Musan County,” said a North Hamgyong Province-based source in a phone conversation with Daily NK on Mar. 5. “After handing out insurance cards, the authorities have been forcing all families to pay KPW 2,000 every month.”
