Associated Student Government tables amendment on meeting publicity

Associated Student Government tabled both its Wednesday discussion and vote on an amendment that would clarify its stance on recording and documentation of Senate meetings. Senate meetings are currently open to the public and student media, allowing recordings and documentation. After reviewing ASG’s code in the fall, the Rules Committee proposed an amendment permitting recording.

ASG Senate passes resolution supporting Palestine in Wednesday session

Associated Student Government passed a resolution supporting Palestinian human rights during Wednesday’s session.  The “Resolution Concerning the Response to the Israeli Occupation of Palestine” passed in a roll call vote of 20-2, with nay votes from Northwestern College Republicans and Hillel senators. A Weinberg senator abstained from the vote.  “Regardless of religious or political views, the current Israeli-Palestinian conflict cannot be discussed without centering the humanitarian crisis that is going on as a result of the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and blockade of Gaza,” the resolution stated. The petition, authored by an ASG senator, garnered over 300 student co-sponsors. The legislation focused on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as a human rights issue.

Award-winning comedian Ramy Youssef discusses hit show Ramy

Award-winning comedian Ramy Youssef discussed the Muslim American experience and spirituality in his hit show “Ramy” at a Thursday virtual event. The event, co-hosted by A&O Productions and Muslim-cultural Students Association, took place Thursday night over Zoom. Journalist and “Ramy” staff writer Maytha Alhassen moderated the conversation.  Youssef answered questions from audience members and delved into his experience producing “Ramy.” The show, which is streaming on Hulu, narrates the experiences of a Muslim-American family in New Jersey. The main character Ramy is based on Youssef’s life. “I wanted to see a different kind of first-generation (or) second-generation (immigrant) story where it felt closer to my own life,” Youssef said. “I’m not trying to step away from my faith or my culture.
