background checks. with when we say there are these fault lines, almost all americans agree we need gun reform. there is also red flag laws. assault weapons bans. the president is a little behind. so are some of the congressional leaders. they are behind where the country is. walmart and companies like that are taking a lead that the president is not. well, let s talk more about that. as we see more companies like walmart and several others taking a stand on this critical issue, as we see more of it, does that start to sway the balance politically for something to be done about this? well, it s a very good question, george. because what they are doing is representing the will of the people. even in the country, in states like texas and states like virginia and ohio, people do favor some gun reform, some elements of gun reform. but the congress hasn t moved that far. the president needs to come from gun reform advocates.
even things like assault weapons bans, all other kinds of proposals have been upheld by the court. they re letting this consensus, at least so far form. it s not the constitution. it s not the interpretation of the constitution. it s a broken political system and political will that stands in the way, i believe. that may change, but that s the way it is right now. what do you think are the realistic prospects? what are we looking at going forward on this issue? i think we don t know, and we may be in a new era. focused, effective, angry cohort of people who care about this and want stronger gun laws. there has been broad support for stronger gun laws, eastbounds and flows, but it s always much more shallow than the intensity of the nra and its supporters. it may well be that young people, a whole group of them, just don t get why they shouldn t think big just as with the me too movement, just as with marriage equality.
looming on capitol hill, no congressman peter king becoming the first house republican to support an assault weapons ban. king saying, they are weapons of mass slaughter. i don t in every day society. president on gun control, its legislators jobs to come up with something. so they are saying he feels the heat on baxley. why don t you do something? elizabeth: why haven t you done something since 1994 when these assault weapons bans were put into place? what peter king is saying also is that maybe stepping forward will give cover to other republicans to step forward and incentivize democrats, as well. where this goes, we don t know. we know jerry nadler is calling house judiciary back early to potentially september 4th to vote on gun control measures. there s going to be a hearing on
now, we tried that once, the ban on assault weapons, did that make a difference? well, the data on the assault weapons bans is unclear. there s some people that argue that if you look at different parameters that it did make a difference. i guess the short of it is that it didn t make a significant difference that anyone can show, you know, definitely, that this made, you know, this works and will work again. i mean, even vice news, they have a great reporter over there, shauna thomas, she did a report on this and came to the conclusion that the data is unclear that assault weapons so called assault weapons bans made any difference at all. you can find people on both sides of it. but the data certainly doesn t definitively prove that made any difference at all. jon: jamie weinstein, good to have you on. thank you. thank you. jon: pro democracy protesters braving the rain in hong kong today. today s massive turnout was a peaceful one, despite recent
