OCEAN CITY, Md. Ocean City struck a deal with officials from the White Marlin Open this week to lower its event fees and provide thousands in city services all so tournament promoters can put on Marlin Fest, a family-friendly festival celebrating the White Marlin Open.
The White Marlin Open is a world-famous fishing tournament that s been held in Ocean City each August for more than 40 years. The event has been at Harbour Island, a small residential community on 14th Street in Ocean City.
The event draws thousands of spectators each year to watch fish be weighed in, but White Marlin Open promoters were forced to shift the crowds to the Downtown Recreation Complex at Third Street because of the COVID-19 pandemic last year. The new event downtown became known as Marlin Fest.

The Maryland State Board of Education wants public schools across the state to bring back students for full-time, in-person learning by the fall.
In a unanimous resolution passed Tuesday, the board emphasized that state rules for when schools must be open will be in place again for the coming school year.
State Superintendent of Schools Karen Salmon said that only about 42% of public school students are learning in person right now. About 512,000 out of Maryland s 882,000 public school students are not receiving in-person instruction, she said. That s way too many students who have not had or don t currently have access to a normal classroom learning experience, she said. It may be a very long time before we know the true impact of the pandemic on public education.
