The Assam government will introduce a bill to end polygamy in the state during the upcoming budget session of the assembly, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday.

The Assam government plans to ban polygamy in the state and has received strong public support for the proposal. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that his government will now begin the legislative process to make polygamy illegal. A total of 149 suggestions were received in response to the proposed law, with 146 in favor and three organizations expressing opposition. The state government had previously formed an expert committee, which determined that the state legislature has the authority to enact a law banning polygamy.
