GUWAHATI: Highlighting “major irregularities” in the updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) of 1951 in Assam, the NRC authority has moved the Supreme Court seeking a comprehensive and time-bound re-verification of the register.
NRC State Coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma had filed an interlocutory application on May 8. It was accepted on May 11. The NRC was updated under the direct monitoring of the Supreme Court.
He prayed that the SC passes appropriate directions for a complete, comprehensive, and time-bound re-verification of the draft NRC as well as the supplementary list of NRC under the provision of Clause 4(3) of the Schedule of the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Cards) Rules 2003, where major irregularities have been highlighted in the body of the instant application”.

Observing that citizenship is one of the most important rights of a person, the Gauhati High Court recently said that any question arising about the citizenship of a person must be adjudicated on the basis of merits on hearing the person concerned.
A division bench comprising of
Justice N Kotiswar Singh and Justice Soumitra Saikia observed thus: It is to be remembered that citizenship is one of the most important rights of a person. By virtue of citizenship, one becomes a member of a sovereign country and becomes entitled to various rights and privileges granted by law in the country and, as such, if any question arises about citizenship of a person, in our opinion, the same should be adjudicated as far as possible on the basis of merit and on hearing the person concerned.
A person who has proved linkage with parents/grandparents, whose names are in voters lists, can t be declared a foreigner just because he did not show linkage with all relatives.

In an official communication to the State’s Chief Electoral Officer on Friday, the EC ordered the transfer of Sushanta Biswa Sarma from Goalpara “to some suitable post in State headquarters”.
The order named IPS officer Veera Venkata Rakesh Reddy as Mr. Sushanta Biswa Sarma’s replacement.
Earlier, the EC had barred Mr. Himanta Biswa Sarma from campaigning for 48 hours. The Minister has accordingly announced he will stay away from all electoral activities ahead of the third and final phase on April 6.
