GUWAHATI: The active caseload continues to hover between 50,000 and 55,000 in Assam, despite a significant decline in the positivity rate in the last 10 days. Last one month records show new infections overshadowed daily recoveries on most days as prolonged oxygen dependence is resulting in longer stay in hospitals. Senior health officials said that the active caseload in the state is related to the number of deaths which has been between 70-90 everyday of late. From May 1 to May 29, a total of 1,50,500 cases were detected in Assam but during the same period 1,17,440 Covid patients recovered. The recovery rate in Assam during the second wave (from April 1 to May 28) has been 69.5%, the latest update by the health department stated. The recovery in the first wave (Between March 31, 2020 and March 31, 2021) was 98.6%. Representative image. GUWAHATI: Eighty-nine people died of Covid-19 in Assam on Wednesday, while 6,143 new cases were detected in the last 24 hours. The positivity rate in the state dropped to 6.02% from 6.47% on Tuesday. The Covid recovery rate in the state was 84.97% on Wednesday. This was after 4,057 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours. Even after the daily tests crossed one lakh-mark on Wednesday after a long time, the increase in the number of fresh cases was by about 300, as compared to Tuesday. The marginal improvement in positivity rate is not helping the health department to draw a conclusion. Senior health officials in Assam have predicted that the second wave of Covid-19 will reach its peak towards May-end.
