HELP University’s annual Asian Secondary School Online English Debate Challenge 2021 begins today, with the grand finals on Sunday.
Forty teams from 24 non-English medium schools from Malaysia and overseas are in the competition, which was previously called the HELP University National Chinese Independent Secondary School (CISS) English Debate.
This annual competition by HELP University aims to raise non-English medium secondary school students’ command of English, in particular those from Chinese independent secondary schools.
Since its inception, eight rounds of competitions have been conducted until 2019. Last year the debate was not held due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The results have been encouraging, and with the debating standard of CISS students reaching a level comparable to students from national and private schools, HELP University opened the competition to SMJKs, SMKs and other non-English medium schools locally and from overseas.
