Didal and Sanbongi take top honours at Asia Skateboarding Awards

Wednesday, 10 March 2021 Asian Games gold medallist Margielyn Didal and Shin Sanbongi have been named respective women’s and men’s Asia Skater of the Year for 2020 at the inaugural Asia Skateboarding Awards, with each receiving $1,500 (£1,000/€1,200).. The event involved more than 250 nominations across six categories using video clips, with a final adjudication for Skater of the Year. Entries were received from all over Asia, including Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Nepal, the Maldives, Afghanistan, Iran and Palestine. Didal, a 21-year-old from Cebu in The Philippines, was chosen from an entry of 60 women skateboarders. She won street gold at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, and won two titles at the Southeast Asian Games the Philippines hosted a year later.

The 21-year-old Cebu native beat out seven other finalists. In winning the award, the Asian Games and Southeast Asian Games gold medalist received $1,500. Ms. Didal also topped the Style for Miles and Fastest Feet in the East categories. Currently ranked 14 th in the world, Ms. Didal is training in Cebu and hopes to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics later this year. TAGS

Didal was also shortlisted in the Creative Sole and Trick of the Year awards. For now, the 2019 Southeast Asian Games double gold medalist is set to take home a total of $300, approximately P14,544. She is also poised to earn additional $1500, around P72,720, with the top plum nomination Asia Skater of the Year in women’s play along with compatriot Cindy Lou Serna. Meanwhile, fellow skateboarders Daniel Ledermann and Mak Feliciano, who respectively won gold and silver medals in the 2019 SEA Games, were also nominated as the Asia Skater of the Year in the men’s division. Didal, Serna, Feliciano are currently training in Cebu ahead of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics in July.

Didal was named in the Top 3 of the Fastest Feet and Creative Sole awards in the women’s category while Jerwin Santos and Motic Panugalinog took spots in the men’s play of the Creative Sole honor. Didal joined Japanese skateboarders Momiki Nishiya and Nanaka Fujisawa in the Fastest Feet. Didal and Nishiya once again met in Creative Sole together with South Korea’s Arim Go. Santos, Panugalinog, and another Japanese skateboarder in Kento Yoshioka led the Creative Sole in the men’s category.

8 Filipino skateboarders join Didal in regional award nomination

The recent nomination includes 16-year-old Kyle “Smokey” Siarot for Rookie of the Year, Jeff Gonzales for Styles for Miles, Motic Panugalinog and Jerwin “Spanky” Santos for Creative Sole, Christopher “Ping” Hurich and Daryl Dominguez for Fast Feet, and 2019 Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Daniel Ledermann and Renzo Mark “Mak” Feliciano for the Asia Trick of the Year.
