TOKYO Team Philippines rebounded from a heartbreaking episode suffered late Sunday after Carlos Yulo’s misadventure in artistic gymnastics as flyweight Irish Magno followed Nesthy Petecio to the Round of 16 of the boxing competition at the Kokugikan Arena Monday.
Mixing control and punching power, Magno steered clear of complications by outboxing Christine Ongare of Kenya through three rounds 5-0 in the women’s 48-51kg Round of 32 bout.

EJ OBIENA (athletics) – Obiena, 25, became the first Filipino athlete to qualify to the Tokyo Olympics after hitting the Olympic pole vault standard of 5.81 meters in a Pole Vault meet in Chiara, Italy in 2019. Ranked No. 10 in the world, Obiena has significantly improved his season best to 5.87m at a Polish event early July, which also resets the national outdoor record. He finished fourth at the Bauhaus-Galan Wanda Diamond League Meeting in Stockholm, Sweden last July 4 – a tournament that served as a preview of the Olympics. He has been based in Formia, Italy for the past years, training under Ukrainian coach Vitaly Petrov.

Margielyn Didal has written history in her own way as far as the Tokyo Olympics is concerned. Didal, 22, becomes the first Filipina skateboarder to qualify for the Olympics as skateboarding officially marks its official launch in this edition.
The jolly Cebuana, ranked No. 17 in the world and. No. 5 in Asia, will compete against the best of the best namely Brazilians Pamela Rosa, Rayssa Leal, her idol Leticia Bufoni, Japanese Aori Nishimura and Momiji Nishiya, among others.
Didal, considered as the face of the Philippine skateboarding scene and the first winner of the Asia Skateboarder of the Year, hopes to continue her legacy in the sports following successful stints in the 2018 Asian Games and the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, where she hauled gold medals after gold medals.
