Thomas Shaw, chair of Cumbria Future Leaders You may be forgiven for thinking that Sellafield is the only cog driving the engine that is the economy of Cumbria, but that’s simply false; what I have seen during my time on the Futures Forum and serving as chair of Cumbria Future Leaders, is that while nuclear will remain critical to the broader economic prosperity, we’re alive with vibrant organisations. Despite the upheaval of the past 12 months, I remain positive about our future; we have a thriving tourism industry. That will see the masses flock to the picturesque tranquillity that is the Lake District. All of this, coupled with investment opportunities in the area from eco-tourism, growth deals and investigations into the feasibility of developing a prototype fusion reactor on land adjacent to Sellafield. I believe that we can pioneer first-class industrial innovation while ensuring that the environment is not only protected but enhanced.
