Police are hunting for the driver who sped down Melbourne s Bourke Street Mall

Police are still hunting a driver who caused chaos by speeding down Melbourne s Bourke Street Mall, driving erratically and sending pedestrians fleeing. Officers had tried to pull over the green Mitsubishi Lancer on Swanston Street just before 5pm on Thursday, but the car sped away before turning down Bourke Street. A male passenger got out of the car and ran away, as police drew their firearms in a bid to stop the driver. But he did a U-turn back along Bourke Street and escaped. Officers found the car on Ashworth Street in Albert Park just before 7pm without number plates.

Witness Appeal for Bourke Street Evade

Police are investigating following an incident in Melbourne CBD this afternoon. Police attempted to pull over a green Mitsubishi Lancer about 4.55pm on Swanston Street in relation to a traffic related incident. The vehicle evaded police and travelled north on Swanston Street before turning down Bourke Street Mall, driving along the tram tracks before crashing into a bollard. At the time of the vehicle crashing into the bollard police drew their firearms. A male passenger ran on foot towards Elizabeth Street and the vehicle did a U-turn back along Bourke Street towards Swanston Street. It was followed by Victoria Police Air Wing and has since been located on Ashworth Street in Albert Park about 6.40pm without number plates.

However, police have decided not to release images of the suspects at this stage. “Given this is yet another incident in Bourke Street and we know the history of Bourke Street we at police absolutely get the concern around community safety particularly in the areas of mass gathering, particularly our city particularly at this time as more and more people come back into the city returning to work,” Mr Cornelius said. He detailed what unfolded in the CBD on Thursday in a bid to explain how the pair managed to evade police and remain on the run. At no time were police ever in an active pursuit with the driver, Mr Cornelius insisted. He said the whole incident unfolded within four minutes.
