State troopers arrested an 18-year-old activist at the Iowa Capitol Thursday as a group rallied against proposed legislation that would increase qualified immunity for law enforcement officers and heighten penalties for some protest-related offenses.
While the group demonstrated on the first floor of the Capitol early Thursday afternoon, state troopers arrested Josie Mulvihill, of Des Moines, charging her with assaulting a police officer, a serious misdemeanor.
Sgt. Alex Dinkla, a spokesperson with the Iowa State Patrol, said Thursday afternoon that he was still gathering information on the incident.
Mulvihill declined to comment on her arrest before she spoke to an attorney, but she showed a Register reporter the criminal complaint against her later Thursday.
The media ignored a mini-storming of the Iowa State Capitol building. Misbehavior was livestreamed by Cortez Rice from Minneapolis, the nephew of George Floyd.
“This is the new Jim Crow,” Rice said. “If we don’t put our foot on this sh t’s neck, this will be happening everywhere,” he said.
After putting graffiti on the steps of the Iowa state capitol with chalk, the BLM protestors moved inside the building. They tried to perform a socially distanced “die-in” for 9 minutes and 29 seconds, the length of time that George Floyd was held on the ground for.
“Where was this energy on January 6th with the insurrectionists,” one woman shouted.
