A New Charlotte Food Fest Celebrates Black Chefs – Garden & Gun

Subrina and Greg Collier, of the restaurant Leah & Louise in Charlotte. With COVID restrictions finally easing, star-packed food festivals are beginning to return to the scene. But a new festival planned for this fall in Charlotte aims to bring a different focus than the big gatherings: celebrating Black chefs. While Black chefs have long been an integral part of Charlotte’s food scene, they weren’t getting the recognition they deserved. That began to change in 2016, when a group of Black chefs in Charlotte put on a pop-up dinner, Soul Food Sessions, designed to showcase the city’s Black cooking talent and garner the chefs more visibility. The dinners became semi-regular events, and they eventually expanded to a three-city tour that took them to Washington, Baltimore, and Charleston. For the chefs, it was a vital means of exposure.

Shanti: Food history and building a staff-first restaurant

After exploring the roots of Southern food as chef de cuisine at Benne on Eagle, Shanti is learning about life balance. She’s taking time to get to know Asheville outside of the restaurant and working toward her goals with intention. Neither her first restaurant nor her first cookbook have a landing date yet. With the book, she has the flexibility to let the concept shapeshift. With the restaurant, Shanti remains laser focused. She first wants to change the norms the industry usually follows. Then comes the rest. “People always ask me when I’m opening, and I say, ‘Give me a minute. I’m reconstructing an entire system right now,” she said.

Here s the story: Hackett intends to use the $50,000 grant to help grow Asheville s own Black Wall Street. Entrepreneurship is one of the quickest ways a marginalized person can build wealth, Hackett said in September, days away from opening his cafe. Instead of working a 9-5, they can take their own ideas and build a product they can sell, and that s how it s been done for years.
