Houma firefighters extinguish kitchen fire Staff Houma firefighters extinguished a kitchen fire Friday evening.   The Houma Fire Department responded around 5 p.m. to the 400 block of Ashlawn Street after a fire started inside of an oven, officials said. Smoke was seen emanating from the home.   Because the oven was locked closed, fire crews removed it from the home with the fire still contained inside to prevent more damage to the home, authorities said. The flames were extinguished safely outside and no injuries were reported.  The Houma Fire Department urged residents to be careful when cooking.  “All are reminded that while cooking someone should be closely monitoring the status of all items cooking at all times,” the department said. “No one should put water or a grease fire, it will only make it worse.
