Asaba International Airport: Build-up to concession, issues, benefits

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2021 is a day that will not escape a chapter in the history of Aviation in Nigeria and a reference, even if obliquely, in Africa.
It was the day the Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa presided over the signing of the Concession Agreement of the Asaba International Airport. The Airport is the first Brownfield Airport in Nigeria and indeed Africa.
The Concession model adopted is new and first of its kind which has not been used anywhere globally. This is why it will be a case study and if it succeeds, would most likely ignite a bandwagon adoption.

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta, has congratulated the Special Project Director, Asaba International Airport, Mr Austine Ayemidejor, as he clocks 60 years.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Olisa Ifeajika, in Asaba, the governor said that Ayemidejor was a political tactician and administrator, who had contributed immensely to the public service in the state.
He particularly commended Ayemidejor for his role in the management and the recent successful concessioning of the Asaba International Airport.
The governor noted that Ayemidejor had had outstanding service to the state, working as Supervisory Councilor, Secretary to Sapele Local Government Council and civil commissioner from 2014 to 2015.

THE International lounge of the Asaba International Airport hosted prominent Deltans, top Government functionaries and investors Tuesday as the Airport was concessioned to a master concessionaire (FIDC-Menzies Consortium, now incorporated as Asaba Airport Company Limited) and sub-concessionaires of technical partners with a designated area of investment for 30 years by the State Government after five years of rigorous and painstaking exercise.
Among the sub-concessionaires is Air Peace airline which has the mandate of the anchor airline with the construction and operation of Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility at the airport. Multiflight Cargo and Logistics will manage the cargo aspect and its development. Arbico Construction Company will develop the Business Park, Hotel and Convention Centre; Rainoil Limited and Cybernetics Limited are to develop tank farm and aviation
