Boldon, in an interview with Newsday on Wednesday, said it will be a tough outing for the TT team led by two-time Olympic medallist Keshorn Walcott. TT’s best Olympic showing came at the 2012 London Games. TT copped one gold, one silver and two bronze medals. Four years later in Rio, Walcott’s bronze in the men’s javelin was TT’s only medal.

Trinidad and Tobago athletes miss Olympic qualification in Texas meet Asa Guevara - TT ATHLETES continued to vie for Olympic qualification with the track and field trio of Sparkle McKnight, Asa Guevara and Taejha Badal competing at the USA Track and Field Open in Ft Worth, Texas, on Tuesday. In the men’s 400-metre timed finals, Guevara was tenth overall in 47.07 seconds, even though he was third in heat two. American Micheal Cherry, winner of heat three, was first overall in 44.37. The Olympic qualification standard for the men’s 400m event is 44.90. In the women’s 400m hurdles, McKnight was sixth overall after placing fifth and last in the second of two heats. McKnight clocked 57.73 which was not enough to achieve the Olympic standard of 55.40.

An NAAA media release on Wednesday said, “It is with regret that NAAA announces that it is withdrawing its team to compete at the 2021 World Athletics Relays, to be held in Poland on May 1 and 2. This decision has not been taken lightly but after careful consideration of the various challenges posed by the covid19 pandemic, the potential risk to participants and the significant difficulties with travel arrangements (NAAA decided it was best). NAAA is particularly concerned over the welfare of our athletes.”
