Black and brown business owners getting millions to kickstart businesses in the cannabis industry

Black and brown business owners getting millions to kickstart businesses in the cannabis industry and last updated 2021-05-28 13:47:04-04 DENVER, Colo. — More Black and brown people have criminal records for possessing or selling marijuana, but as more states legalize cannabis, those same people make up a small percentage of business owners in the industry. For the families who lived through this very scenario, it’s painful and tough to overcome. “My dad served 21 years in prison for something that people are making billions of dollars off of every single year,” said Arzelle Lewis, a Denver entrepreneur, who is now trying to get into the cannabis industry himself.

Wanda James of Colorado s First Black-Owned Dispensary on Franchising

Wanda James Simply Pure is rolling out a franchise model to empower BIPOC entrepreneurs. As one of Colorado s premier cannabis companies, Simply Pure s sales were up 50% in 2020 from 2019.  The store s feel and how it sources products were inspired by top brands Tiffany s and Whole Foods. In the over five years she served in the Navy, Wanda James rose from an officer in the University of Colorado s ROTC program to lieutenant before ending her duty in 1991.  After stints as a leader in the food and beverage space, in marketing, and serving as campaign manager for Governor Jared Polis congressional bid and on the finance committee for former President Barack Obama, the Colorado-based veteran now hopes with her husband and business partner Scott Durrah to bring their cannabis brand, Simply Pure, to additional markets and build a franchise model that empowers minorities in need.

Arzelle Lewis Had a Game Plan for His Father, Starting With Clemency

A towering presence at 6’4”, Harris had played a semester of college ball in Texas before dropping out of school. Now he could reach his son in ways that others couldn’t, sticking an elbow in Lewis’s back and swatting his shots away one moment, pumping him up the next. Lewis was already tough, but as his sessions with his father continued, he showed new self-determination and faith in himself. But then Harris vanished. When Lewis finally found out where his father was and how long he would be gone this time, it “felt like he died,” he remembers. Charged with possession of 4 ounces of cocaine in Denver, Harris had expected a slap on the wrist. Maybe ten years, max. Defense attorneys estimated something closer to twelve years. But prosecutors played off Harris’s past cannabis convictions, and the judge sentenced him to 96 years in prison.
