[ Editor’s Update: On 4 August 2018, Avnery suffered a stroke and was hospitalized in a critical condition in Tel Aviv. He died at Ichilov Hospital on 20 August 2018 at the age of 94, less than a month short of his 95th birthday.

Despite my years of publishing him on VT, I never had a conversation with him. I did get an email once, after we have put him on the staff page, actually an honorary position as he had not asked for it, and asked us to remove him.

As we strive to create accurate representations within our collective memories, it is relevant to understand that history shapes the ways in which we see others and ourselves; the past impacts the present and informs our future. That is why it is important to formulate ways in which memory institutions can fill existing gaps and prevent them from recurring in the future.
