As many of you may have already heard, after 150 years at 194 Shaftesbury Avenue we are closing the shop. Arthur Beale on Shaftesbury Avenue in the West End is to close after 150 years in the location. The company itself, which sells sailing equipment and accessories, was formed as John Buckinghams around 500 years ago. The retailer is the latest to say its bricks and mortar business has been a casualty of the pandemic. Arthur Beale said it will close the store on June 24 and has launched a clearance sale.

A sailing goods store that’s been equipping adventurers for half a millennium is closing its doors for good next month. Arthur Beale, which was called John Buckinghams when it opened in the 1600s, survived through some hard times. But the BBC reports high rent on London’s West End and the COVID pandemic wiped it out. “A lot of people think it’s bizarre that there’s a yacht chandler in London but 500 years ago the Thames was pretty important from a nautical perspective,” co-owner Hugh Taylor said. “All the Everest explorers would come to the shop in London for their supplies.”
