'We're seeing really positive trends': How Utah's doing 2 months into the fire season

SALT LAKE CITY Considering Utah s bone-dry conditions and the record pace of human-caused fires the state experienced heading into the traditional fire season this summer, Utah wildfire experts were pleasantly surprised with where the state is at in the final week of July. While it s been an active fire season across the West, it seems as if at least for now Utah s has quieted down, with dozens of Utah firefighters assigned to fires in Idaho, Montana and Oregon instead. As of Wednesday afternoon, the Black Pine Fire near the Utah-Idaho border is the largest active fire at 563 acres, but crews were able to get 100% containment on the fire this week.

'A lot of work to be done here': Utah crews help fight large fires in Oregon, Montana

KSL TV SALT LAKE CITY Dozens of Utah firefighters began this week helping out with large wildfires in Oregon and Montana. Utah Wildland Task Force 1 and 2 remain stationed at the Bootleg Fire burning 15 miles northwest of Beatty, Oregon. In a video posted by the Unified Fire Authority Monday afternoon, firefighters said they were mopping up a section of the massive fire, which means they were working to cool down hot areas where the fire has burned. There s a lot of work to be done here, said Anders Pritchard, a Draper firefighter and task force member, in the video. It s a big fire so we re just trying to focus on our little piece of it.
