Christieâs auction house made headlines last week with a groundbreaking digital art saleâthe first purely digital artwork has sold for $69 million. This is the latest craze in the art world, as NFTs, or ânon-fungible tokens,â are seeing a gold rush in the art market.Â
An NFT is a special type of cryptographic token that acts as a digital stamp of authenticity. This digital artwork, called
Beepleâs Opus, is created by Beeple (the art moniker of South Carolina artist Mike Winkelmann). It is a collection of 5,000 images, including photographs, illustrations, digital sketches, and abstract 3-D renderings that traces the evolution of the artist over the past 13 and a half years. Noah Davis, a contemporary art specialist at Christieâs New York, calls this artwork as âa kind of Duchampian readymade.â

Four! This is the percentage of art sold at major art auctions worldwide that was created by women.

A team of researchers from the Netherlands, Australia, and the United States studied over 2.6 million artworks sold at auction from 2000-2017 at 1,800 top auction houses, and found that
women are entirely absent from the top strata of art sales, where 42 male artists enjoy 40% of sale values. Just one female artist, Joan Mitchell, cracks the top 50.
These numbers are particularly damning given that roughly even numbers of men and women pursue degrees in fine arts.

Participation in that film project would likely be enough to whet anyone’s appetite when it comes to matters of artistic provenance. But Clooney had another reason to be well versed on the topic: His wife, human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, was at the time advising the Greek government on how best to reclaim the marbles. Ultimately, however, the government did not pursue her counsel to take up the matter in British courts.
Flash-forward to the present day, and it appears that George Clooney is taking considerable steps of his own to rectify what many see as an enduring example of Great Britain’s colonialist past. (The aforementioned quote, though picked up by various outlets, was actually first shared earlier this year as part of a letter to an assemblage of professors and scholars.) Perhaps then, considering that the year is still young, there will be plenty more time for Clooney art-advocacy action on the horizon.
