I arrive at the cabin in Ellijay, Georgia, where I worked on my thesis in September 2020. In the backyard, I see dozens of ancient trees; those trees are a portal into a different world, connected with generations of Southern families and forest creatures.

As part of the editing process, I hand-edit each poem because it is easier for me to find typos or grammatical errors. Under advice from my adviser, I also print out each poem to place them thematically on my wall. I move them around into different groupings as I envision my poetry manuscript s overall framework.
