Dutch King Willem-Alexander issued a historic royal apology Saturday for the Netherlands involvement in slavery, saying he felt "personally and intensely" affected.
Willem-Alexander addressed the people of origin from the former Dutch colonies. His ancestors are among the biggest beneficiaries of slavery in the colonies. The 56-year-old monarch delivered his speech to thousands of people from Suriname, South America, as well as from the Caribbean islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. Willem-Alexander emphasized that slavery and the slave trade constituted "crimes against humanity" He felt "personally and deeply affected," said the king in his speech.
