East Hartford-based Goodwin University completed a $32 million acquisition of most of the University of Bridgeport s real estate and academic programs.
The U.S. Department of Education, Connecticut office of Higher Education and New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) all approved the deal, under which UB will function as an independent institution with its own leadership and board of trustees under Goodwin s ownership.
“In addition to ensuring that UB’s rich history of higher education would continue in its namesake city for years to come, we wanted to also be sure its leadership reflected UB students and the City of Bridgeport,” Goodwin President Mark Scheinberg said.

BRIDGEPORT Paier College has found a new home on the University of Bridgeport’s campus.
Paier announced on Monday it will relocate to Bridgeport in time for the fall semester. The school has also changed its name from Paier College of Art to Paier College, officials said, to reflect an expansion of degree offerings.
The move marks the latest development in Paier’s acquisition of struggling UB art programs in a joint deal forged this summer alongside Goodwin University.
“As we spent more time in Bridgeport and around the campus,” said Joe Bierbaum, the president of Paier College, “we just fell in love with the area and said ‘this can be the next refrain of the school.’”
Paier College of Art in Hamden announced it is moving to Bridgeport as part of a campus co-location setup with Goodwin University, and will change its name to Paier College.
Paier College will remain an independent institution and plans to transition its operations to the University of Bridgeport campus over the summer in advance of the fall semester, according to Paier.
“As we evaluated the best path forward to achieve our long-term goals, it became clear that changing our name to embrace the growth of our programs and relocating to Bridgeport would offer the greatest benefits to our current and future students and faculty,” Paier President Joseph Bierbaum said.
