the sunnis in iraq have to feel like they are part of iraq, like the baghdad government is supportive of them. that s what caused isis to rise when almal aky took hold, they shut out the sunnis and they threw them in prison. that s what drove the sunnis into the arms of isis and if baghdad doesn t change they ll continue to have those struggles and frankly there is nothing we can do or should do about it. that s a fair point. congressman, i want you to listen to what the white house press secretary sean spicer said today about safe havens for syrian civilians in syrian civilians. that s one of the president s top foreign policy priorities. we don t have the clip. but i want your reaction. this is what the trump administration wants the so-called safe havens in syria
why? it s a conversation i have been having with various isis militants who i u speak to for awhile now. it s always struck me as quite curious that they have said they would welcome u.s. troops on the ground. i think first of all, you have to see this as bluster and bravo do above anything else and propaganda. but beyond that i do think they have a sense that a visible presence of u.s. troops on the ground in syria would be very polarizing and perhaps they are hoping that they can capitalize on that, that perhaps it will push some other islamist groups that have been fighting against isis into the the arms of isis. but at this stage, we re not really talking about a visible presence on the ground. we re talking about a few dozen advisers who will be training, who will be assisting and what s interesting on that front is that the fighters we spent time with on the ground told us what they really need in order to
of all those who have influence in the region to say what do we do to stop isis and get syria away from being a failed state. bill: the headline is russia cut a deal with iraq and iran and they are going to go after isis. iraq is an enemy, the baghdad government an enemy, and so is syria. but syria has not been able to do much. i think we shouldn t get arms and weapons to assad. and we have been fighting against assad in flying the arms that have gone against assad. the first thing i would have done, a year or two ago i wouldn t have been supplying arms that wound up in the arms of isis. we ve helped isis inadvertently
