of what took place. this was an epic fail. neil: i m sorry, but we have to cut here. i want to thank you very much for joining us. why did that deputy not go in that school? did he freeze? what does that tell of future actions? we re talking about arming schools, teachers and administrators. what if that happens again? the issue over mental health goes far and beyond just this shooting. more after this. (highway noise) my name s dustin. hey, dustin. grab a seat. nice to meet you. have you ever had car trouble in a place like this? (semi-truck noise) yes and it was like the worst experience of my life. seven lanes of traffic and i was in the second lane. when i get into my car, i wanna know it s going to get me from point a to point b. well, then i have some good news. chevy is the only brand to receive j.d. power dependability awards for cars, trucks and suvs two years in a row. wait. (group laughter) i definitely feel like i m in a dependable vehicle right now. i want a chevy now.
purposes you have the fbi missing that tip, you have local law enforcement officers being called this this gunman s house, 35, 36, 37 times. and then you have this happening. there is a real law enforcement problem. it won t be solved, as the new york post said, by arming schools because if you have people coming in with ar-15s and you have teachers with a gun a pistol, they re going to cower. and we don t want to arm the schools, it doesn t make sense but we ve got to look at law enforcement. we have to figure out how to have a more holistic approach saying we have to focus on guns. i think we have to focus on guns since i said at newtown but we have to look at this other component. joining us now, editor at new yorker.com, michael luo who spent a great deal of time doing
21. yesterday these oth yet these other weapons we talk about, they re allowed to buy them at 18. how does that make sense? how does that make sense? i say it should all be at 21. but we re not really talking the about money. we re talking about common sense. and it s a great thing. and the nra will back it. i really feel very confident. the nra will back it and so will congress and so will the senate. but on wednesday, the nra released a statement reading in part, legislative proposal toes that prevent law-abiding adults age 18 to 20 years old from acquire rifles and shotguns effectively prohibits them for purchasing any firearm, thus depriving them of their constitutional right to self-protection. the notion of arming schools originated with the nra. now the president is giving that idea a new military and monetary twist. watch this. frankly, you have teachers that are marines for 20 years, they retire and they become a
president trump, i think you are enlisting them in the nra army because you are saying everybody has to have guns. we are going to have to have guns everywhere, even around our children. with the proliferation of guns in schools, i think you can anticipate there are going to be more gun incidents and schools. to me, that s not a good idea. i think what we want to do is seek clearly. the problem is because of the nra and its power over the politicians, you get into a situation like you had last night at the cnn event or marco rubio, he is saying i am for lowering the age limit which is what president trump has said with regard for guns. people say oh, no. what about greg: you are a fixation on the nra is your way out of a debate. juan: no, i m glad to have greg: what we talked about. juan: i said i think arming schools is essentially asking
for rifle owners. but arming schools is a poison pill for democrats and might be a deal breaker for some republicans too. the notion that my kids are going to school with teachers that are armed with a weapon is not something that quite frankly i m comfortable with. but as a father and as someone talked to plenty of teachers including the three in my family and the assistant principal in my family, i don t think that is a goodoid yar idea. and in an election year, we know from past experience republicans fear the base on the issue of gun control but you have to wonder if there are democrats that fear the republican base more than their own base. for instance, look at the pennsylvania special election for congress in that 18th district. the democratic candidate connor graham could pull an upset in a district that trump won by 20 points but he isn t calling on any new laws. as the local pittsburgh press noted he s using the same talking points as his opponent
