Vaccine pop-ups led by churches in Sarasota-Manatee

At St. Armands Key Lutheran Church, Director of Operations and Minister of Music Michael Bodnyk worked with church leaders to get a vaccine clinic organized for “quite a while,” he said. A parishioner who worked at Hedges HealthMart Pharmacy in Sarasota made a connection, and the pharmacy offered to supply and administer vaccines and handle registration for an event at the church. “In our demographic of parishioners, there are a lot of older people with compromised immune systems. Getting the vaccine was important to a lot of them,” Bodnyk said. “Obviously, we wanted to be helpful in any way we could.”

St Armands Key Lutheran Church hosts garden concert | Longboat Key

Though social calendars don t fill up as they used to in the era of COVID-19, the St. Armands Key Lutheran Church has found a way to bring members and new friends together two Sundays a month.  The church held another one of its garden concerts on March 7, inviting anyone eager to get out of the house for an afternoon to the tranquil space beside the church for an hour of live music. Director of Music Michael Bodnyk has been organizing free outdoor concerts with local bands since late summer in an attempt to provide a safe space for members and residents to mingle once more.

Temple Beth Israel continues food drives | Longboat Key

On recent Fridays, half of the Temple Beth Israel parking lot is devoted to collecting as much food and home items as possible in 30 minutes to benefit Second Chance, Last Opportunity, a Newtown nonprofit that offers food and life skills classes.  The most recent drive was Feb. 5, when a team gathered carloads of donations. The temple has been hosting food drives since last fall, and while it started as only temple members, it’s grown.  “I’m starting to see people I don’t recognize,” volunteer Karen Gary said. The temple group hosts food drives every six weeks, Gary said, and they fill up at least two cars and sometimes more every time, mostly with nonperishable food. Other temple members make lunches every week, too, and money will get dropped off at the temple.

St Armands Key Lutheran Church returns to outdoor concerts | Longboat Key

St. Armands Key Lutheran Church returned to its outdoor concert series with two showings from local jazz band The Romantics in January. Their most recent concert was Jan. 24.  The Romantics kept things light with jazzy tunes that had attendees swaying in their seats and tapping their toes. The afternoon felt nearly summery as the concert started, but the temperature fell as the sun did. About 30 church members and visitors set up chairs in the meditation garden to enjoy the music.  SAKLC began its outdoor concerts over the summer of 2020, as the COVID-19 continued to keep church members apart. Outdoor concerts provided a safe way for members to get out of the house for an afternoon and enjoy some of the live entertainment that makes the region. Director of music Michael Bodnyk started by finding local musicians at the Sarasota Farmers Market and has since brought in other regular performers.
